eScience as a Pledge for the Sevelopment of Science and a Democratic Dociety

Abstract

This paper deals with the consideration of the importance of the process of establishing eScience, in the context of the transparency of science and, in this connection, the potential scope and reach of Serbian science as a whole and increasing its influence in the international scientific arena. The principle of transparency has already brought benefits to regional sciences (e.g. Slovenia), but also to European scientific practice (e.g. Poland) and eScience here is an attempt to realize a similar principle. In the paper, we will point out the short-term and long-term consequences of establishing the concept of eScience, with an emphasis on potential financial savings for the state system, from which all citizens can benefit. The current scientific production, i.e. the annual bibliography of Serbian researchers offers a kind of overview of the state of Serbian science, its currents and trends, so the general conclusions are self-evident. In the paper, we will also look at certain technical solutions in eScience and point out potential problems, but also their benefits, all related to the digital development of society and especially science, with special reference to the concept of "open science" and the role of libraries. In this regard, one of the main theses of the work is that it is impossible to establish such a system without a significant share of libraries and librarians, not only in terms of data processing, but also in terms of the architecture of the entire system and its sustainability.
