TEACHING "PARANORMAL VS. ZETETICS" AT UNIVERSITY: USING PSEUDOSCIENCE TO TEACH THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD
UDC: 165:159.961
Abstract: The wide presence of “paranormal” and pseudo-sciences and their elevation to the status of true media stars points to the problem of diffusion of scientific culture. This true intellectual virus attacks almost all socio-professional categories (the education is not the exception of the rule). Concretely, what has to be done? The development of Zetetics, or the Art of Doubt, should be encouraged. On the basis of teaching that started at the University of Nice-Sophia Antipolis in France, this article gives a numerous examples of concrete applications of Zetetics concepts known as Facets and Effects, with the aim to open discussions that would address issues that are imperative today: the protection from pseudo-sciences and development of the critical mind.
Keywords: Zetetics, the art of doubt, teaching, pseudo-sciences, believes, paranormal, scientific method, critical mind
